To spread the word about this amazing place, we could have engaged some big brand agency but instead, we went to the real experts, the people who live here. The outcome was our Tell a Friend campaign and the results were as fresh, forward looking and full of surprises as the region itself.

The Tell a Friend Campaign
The Tell a Friend Campaign was created by Aoraki Development Business & Tourism to increase awareness and pride in South Canterbury through community engagement and a range of media by encouraging local people to use their contacts to promote South Canterbury.
The 25 diverse entries received for the Tell a Friend campaign ranged from videos and Facebook campaigns through to blogs, websites, phone apps and chain letters. An estimated 70,000 people had viewed or been reached by Tell a Friend projects by close of stage one.
For the second stage of the competition each finalist had a commercial video produced of their own personal story. They then shared this video to gain as many unique views as possible. The competition was featured on National primetime television show Breakfast TV and the six finalists’ videos were fully viewed by over 20,000 people and embedded onto 85 websites around the world. A compilation video has also been created for the region.
With wide support from the business community and two launch events in Timaru and Tekapo the campaign has been extremely well supported. Many of the entries continue to gain traction and promote this wonderful district.
The $10,000 prize package awarded to the finalist included:
- $1000 cash
- $1000 Caltex fuel vouchers
- Return Flights for 2 to Timaru
- Timaru Package, [Value over $3,300] including gym membership and shopping vouchers
- Discover Geraldine Adventure Package [Value over $1,000] including tourism activities
- Tekapo Package [Value over $1,000]
- South Canterbury Food Package [Value over $1,000] of assorted products from South Canterbury producers
