Steve Evans, jeweller of more than 25 years, offers this service. “It is a very rewarding process to go through for the client and for me,” he says. “I like to ensure every detail is covered so that the result is exactly what the client has asked for and as close to budget as possible.
“A lot of people are very happy to leave the finer detail of a piece up to me. This enables me to add my touch, which sometimes only evolves as you are working on a piece. Some people do like a little surprise or two.
“Being able to select the gemstones that will be used in making a piece of jewellery is a very important aspect of the process. There is such variation in colour and quality with coloured gems that it can take a while to source exactly the right stones. I have very good gemstone contacts in New Zealand, but also have good gem merchants in Australia, Thailand and Nepal.
“Diamonds of just about any shape, size and quality are readily available through merchants in New Zealand. As with the coloured gems, I always encourage clients to see before buying.”
