Aoraki Development Business & Tourism
As a Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO), Aoraki Development Business and Tourism (previously Central South Island Tourism) is responsible for marketing the region as a destination to domestic and international visitors. Business focus is built around attracting more visitors and strengthening the region’s value proposition to increase length of stay and average spend per visit.
Core Functions
- marketing and promotion of the Timaru District, South Canterbury and the Central South Island as a visitor destination
- provision of visitor information through Visitor Information Centres and taking bookings for attractions, activities, events, South Canterbury accommodation and transport
- working closely with South Canterbury tourism operators in areas such as media promotion, showcasing the region to international travel buyers, marketing, event promotion, product development, training, networking and trade relationships
Services
We provide a range of services to assist local tourism, hospitality and associated businesses develop, maintain and coordinate products and services for the visitor industry. While most strategic and tactical marketing activity is focused around promotion of the region's offering as a whole, some services for individual businesses are provided on a chargeable basis.
Business Partner packages maximise online and traditional marketing activities through a strong web presence and coordinated marketing activity.
Destination Marketing - coordinating a range of projects and initiatives to showcase the region to domestic and international consumers and the travel trade in New Zealand and offshore
- producing district marketing collateral such as guides, maps, brochures and fact sheets
- developing and maintaining a district website including business and event listings
- managing the Timaru and Geraldine i-SITE Visitor Centres and visitor information at the Temuka library
- i-SITE brochure display
- managing communications and developing relationships with national and international travel trade
- developing itineraries and hosting trade familiarisation visits (famils)
Media Promotion - providing local and national media comment on local tourism related issues
- answering national and international travel media enquiries regarding local tourism products, events and tourism development
- developing and maintaining media relationships and progressing storylines for national and international travel and mainstream media
- supporting (and in some cases sponsoring and hosting) media familiarisation visits
- advice on preparation of media releases
- media release distribution
Industry Liaison, Coordination & Development - representing the district at regional, national and international levels Regional Tourism Organisations of New Zealand (RTONZ), Tourism New Zealand, Tourism Industry Association and other industry bodies, national forums and conferences
Tourism Marketing Assistance - development of brochures and other marketing material
- assistance with planning, developing and maintaining a web presence
- assistance with marketing strategy and target market identification
- assistance with developing and managing marketing campaigns
- assistance with supplier brief development
i-SITE Visitor Information Centres
i-SITE is New Zealand’s official visitor information network with 90 i-SITEs nationwide and 29 in the South Island. Aoraki Development Business and Tourism manages the Timaru and Geraldine i-SITES and supports the Information Centre at the Temuka Library.
i-SITE Visitor Information services include travel and regional information and bookings for activities, attractions, accommodation, transport, local events and more. The Timaru and Geraldine i-SITE Visitor Centres also stock quality local products and souvenirs.
