South Canterbury offers a range of both public and private medical facilities.

Several leading medical specialists and surgeons have chosen to settle here, many emigrating from other countries in search of a better lifestyle.

Most COVID-19 regulations have ended in New Zealand. Primary and community health services are integrated with Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand South Canterbury  that employs more than 950 people and provides public hospital and health services to more than 55,000 people. Bidwill Trust Hospital in Timaru offers an extensive range of services including general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, oral, ENT and gynecology.

There are approximately 40 GPs (general practitioner/doctors) throughout South Canterbury and many pharmacies and chemists. It is important to be enrolled with a local GP to ensure you and your family receive the care or referrals you need to be healthy.

South Canterbury is well served with social agencies that cater to the specific requirements within the community and those with ethnic or special needs.

Elderly people are exceptionally well catered for in the district, with a wide range of aged care facilities and support.
