|Mitre 10 and Timaru goes right back to the 1970's. Remember driving around town in your MkIV Escort, Radio Caroline turned up, scouting the town for a new hinge so you could finish fixing the front gate? When Collins Mitre 10 came to town, you knew you didn't have to travel far to find the gear you needed for any project, big or small. All you really wanted to know then, was who this Collins bloke?
William Henry Collins moved to New Zealand in 1866 and spent most of his time dealing with timber. By 1889 he found himself in the happy position to purchase a timber yard in Ashburton, and W.H. Collins & Co. was born. Over time the company greatly expanded our range of goods and services on offer.
After 80 years serving mid-Canterbury, the modern W.H. Collins & Co. felt it was time to venture south. Having joined the Mitre 10 group in 1977, we opened the 61st Mitre 10 Store in New Zealand, Collins Mitre 10 Timaru, at 106 Stafford Street in October 1979.
After a decade or so it was starting to get a bit cramped, so as a result, we decided to move to a newly refurbished Collins Mitre 10 Hardware store just along the road. It wasn't long before we outgrew that store too, so opened the Collins Mitre 10 Home & Trade store on the corner of North and Stafford Streets. The new premises allowed us to better serve the trade and stock a greater range of product ever seen before in Timaru.
By the late 2000's we felt an increasing sense of deja vu. So we hit the Big Orange Button in 2010, closing the Stafford Street store for our new MEGA Store on Bank Street. With a brand new building in the heart of the city, we're still serving the South Canterbury community, bigger and better than ever before.
